We joined our buddy Gus on his 2022 late deer hunt in northern Arizona. Once we heard Gus drew this tag we immediately wanted to help. Of course we offered Gus a Huskemaw Long-Range System to use for his hunt with the expectation that we would also train him to use it. Gus selected one of our in-house 7mmRemMag custom systems topped with a Huskemaw 5-30x56 Tactical Hunter long-range optic. As the hunt approached we were happy to learn that our old friend, Frank Damato’s daughter would be joining us. Frank was Gus’s hunting partner for more than 15 years before he unexpectedly passed away April 26, 2021. Having Gina, her husband Justin and her brother-in-law Jake in camp to lend a hand really made this a special occasion for us to be part of. To add to that, Brett from BOTWAZ was able to get away from the shop for a bit and spend some much needed quality time in the field and as always he played a big part in Gus’s success. This was not a “long-range” hunt by design. In fact, there were many occasions we thought we might tag out at close range but as the circumstances played out Gus’s target buck was located exactly 800 yards across a large opening, making a stalk nearly impossible. Thankfully Gus had the right gear and the proper training to make an ethical shot and close out his hunt. His target buck was a mature old deer who G&F suggests may be more than 10 years old. His rack didn’t grow the points and detail he likely did years ago but his prowess during the rut was clearly on display as he worked a small group of does while several other bucks yielded to his dominance. One shot at 800 yards with a slight head wind was all it took to put the buck down for good. Gus was elated, we were pumped, Gina and the guys were stoked too! It was such a joyous occasion and we hope this video adequately captures the good times we had sharing it together.
